According to the New York Police Department, officers found Anne Burrell “unconscious and unresponsive” and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency services were called to the scene at 7:50 a.m. after a report that she may have suffered cardiac arrest. The information came from a 911 call report provided to PEOPLE by the New York City Fire Department.
Just hours before her sudden passing, Burrell had been working on a new project, making the news even more shocking for those close to her.
Recently, she had taken up improv comedy and performed at The Second City venue in Brooklyn as part of the final showcase for her improv class.
A source close to Burrell told PEOPLE, “Everyone said she was so great last night and so happy.”
Another person who attended the show added, “She was in great spirits last night during and after the improv show. It was typical Anne—fun, outgoing, and clearly having a great time.”
Burrell had first mentioned her interest in improv back on March 19. In an Instagram post, she shared her excitement, writing:
